Business payments firm Bottomline has announced the debut of a new Software-as-a-Service platform engineered to overhaul payment messaging for financial institutions. According to a corporate news release issued on Thursday, Sept. 17, the newly unveiled platform, named Global Pay Connect, is designed to assist banks and other financial organizations in expanding their underlying payments architecture past legacy connectivity limitations through API-enabled capabilities and third-party data integration.
The introduction of the platform comes as financial institutions face mounting industry pressures. According to the company’s announcement, organizations across the sector are increasingly being urged to support real-time payments, comply with ISO 20022 standards, enhance cross-border transparency, and adapt to emerging payment models. However, the release noted that outdated legacy systems continue to create a difficult operational environment for banks attempting to navigate these evolving requirements.
Research conducted by Bottomline underscores the magnitude of the technological hurdle facing the industry. Company findings indicate that 40% of chief financial officers identify obsolete infrastructure as the single largest barrier preventing the adoption of real-time payments. Furthermore, the study revealed that only 28% of financial institutions characterize their current Software-as-a-Service adoption as modern, API-enabled, and end-to-end.
To address these architectural shortcomings, Global Pay Connect provides connectivity spanning a wide array of major domestic and international payment networks. As detailed by Bottomline, these supported networks include Swift, SEPA, SIC, Bacs, CHAPS, CHIPS, Lynx, EBICS, and various host-to-host connections. In addition to network connectivity, the platform offers modernization tools centered around ISO 20022 message transformation, payment data enrichment, and Message Vault functions. The system also supplies operational intelligence through real-time visibility into payment activity and artificial intelligence-enabled insights, which the firm states will help institutions extract greater value from their transaction data.
Alongside the platform launch, Bottomline disclosed a strategic partnership with blockchain technology company Chainlink. Through this collaboration, Global Pay Connect will enable cross-network interoperability, allowing the companies to connect banks smoothly to multiple blockchain networks utilizing a single, network-agnostic integration model.
Vitus Rotzer, global head of banking go-to-market at Bottomline, emphasized the strategic role of the new offering in the firm’s announcement. Rotzer stated that the platform serves as a bridge connecting current payment infrastructure obligations with the future trajectory of payment ecosystems. He added that the system will assist institutions in maximizing value from payment data via intelligent validation and artificial intelligence-enhanced insights, while simultaneously accommodating emerging payment structures such as digital assets and tokenization.
The rollout arrives amidst a broader industry shift toward immediate transaction capabilities. Recent reporting indicates that financial institutions are increasingly forced to address legacy technology they have historically worked around, with 92% of institutions anticipating the enablement of The Clearing House’s RTP network within the next two years. Consequently, industry observers note that real-time payment demands are rapidly transforming infrastructure modernization from a distant strategic goal into an immediate financial and operational imperative.
