Salesforce Expands Defense Tech Push With Reported $375 Million Acquisition of Rune
Customer relationship management giant Salesforce is continuing its aggressive acquisition streak by reportedly agreeing to buy defense technology startup Rune Technologies for $375 million in cash and stock. The transaction, first reported by Resilience Media, highlights the software titan’s deepening expansion into the national security and public sector technology market.
Extending Military Logistics Capabilities
Founded in 2024, Rune specializes in artificial intelligence software designed to help the United States military anticipate supply chain requirements and manage logistics directly from the field. By absorbing Rune, Salesforce plans to bolster Missionforce, its dedicated business unit serving defense and national security agencies. While Missionforce has traditionally focused on back-office administrative planning, the integration of Rune’s frontline logistics intelligence will enable the division to support active battlefield operations.
Missionforce has experienced rapid growth since launching last year, expanding its business by 80% year over year. That momentum has been heavily accelerated by a massive 10-year, $5.6 billion contract secured with the U.S. Army. Prior to the acquisition agreement, Rune raised a total of $30 million from high-profile backers, including Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and the CIA-backed nonprofit venture firm IQT. The startup reached a valuation of $127 million following a Series A funding round led by Human Capital.
A Broader Acquisition Spree
The deal for Rune represents only the latest maneuver in a remarkably active year of corporate deal-making for Salesforce. The enterprise software leader has engaged in multiple high-value transactions to secure artificial intelligence and automation capabilities. Earlier acquisition moves include a $3.6 billion agreement to purchase AI agent platform Fin, previously known as Intercom, as well as a $1.2 billion acquisition of Qualified. Additionally, Salesforce moved to acquire Listen Labs following that startup’s decision to walk away from a late-stage term sheet.
- Salesforce agreed to acquire Rune Technologies for $375 million in cash and stock.
- The acquisition strengthens Salesforce’s Missionforce unit and its ongoing work with the U.S. Army.
- Rune previously raised $30 million from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and IQT.
Industry observers note that these strategic additions reflect a concerted effort by major enterprise technology providers to embed advanced artificial intelligence deep into specialized verticals, including government contracting and defense operations. Salesforce representatives did not respond to requests for comment regarding the reported transaction.
