IRS Expands Tax Pro Account Capabilities to Include Business Client Payments
The Internal Revenue Service has announced a significant update to its digital infrastructure, enabling authorized tax professionals to initiate payments directly on behalf of their corporate and business clients. The new capability represents the latest phase in the federal agency’s ongoing push to modernize its portal and streamline administrative workflows for the accounting community.
Enhancing Digital Portal Functionality
Previously, practitioners utilizing the Tax Pro Account platform could review business client balances and examine historical payment activity, but they lacked the technical mechanism to execute transactions. With the newly deployed functionality, CPAs and other qualified tax practitioners can handle several routine financial obligations without requiring the client to navigate the portal directly.
According to announcements from the agency, the system update aligns with strategic objectives to transition into a more digitally integrated service provider. Leadership at the agency noted that empowering practitioners to resolve client obligations directly is designed to reduce administrative friction and save valuable time for businesses attempting to fulfill compliance mandates.
Available Payment Options and Requirements
Through the updated interface, verified professionals who maintain active authorization relationships can complete several distinct types of financial transactions for corporate entities. The supported payment categories include:
- Full or partial balance settlements
- Payments associated with amended returns
- Submissions for filing extensions
- Remittances for proposed tax assessments
- Federal tax deposits
To utilize these new features, practitioners must ensure they possess the necessary client authorization and maintain the appropriate Centralized Authorization File credentials. The portal originally debuted in July 2021 and has gradually incorporated features such as individual and business CAF number linking, audit status viewing, and client relationship management tools.
