Corporate Climate Coalition Funds Mineralization Carbon Removal Initiative
A prominent coalition of corporate carbon buyers has committed financial backing to an innovative sequestration initiative designed to convert captured atmospheric and industrial emissions into solid rock. The procurement arrangement, valued at $11.7 million, engages sequestration technology provider 44.01 to eliminate nearly 21,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide between 2028 and 2031. Orchestrated through the buyer coalition Frontier, the agreement involves major corporate participants including Stripe, Google, and Shopify, alongside Autodesk, H&M Group, and Workday.
Expanding Permanent Storage Horizons
Established in Oman in 2020, the sequestration specialist focuses on accelerating the natural chemical process of mineralization. The technique involves dissolving captured emissions into water to formulate an acidic fluid that mobilizes cations within subsurface rock formations. Upon injection deep underground, high temperatures, intense pressure, and elevated concentrations trigger a rapid reaction, permanently locking the carbon into a mineral state.
The newly funded deployment represents a significant milestone for the technology provider as it transitions from trial phases to commercial execution. According to project representatives, this initiative will mark the first commercial-scale venture combining biogenic carbon with permanent storage through mineralization. Operating data gathered from the deployment will inform future scaling strategies aimed at establishing in-situ mineralization as a viable global standard for permanent industrial decarbonization.
Frontier Investment Strategy and Regional Expansion
The announcement follows a broader capitalization milestone for the purchasing collective, which recently secured $915 million in commitments from corporate backers. Frontier continues to refine its allocation model by prioritizing suppliers that demonstrate high potential for gigaton-scale impact while requiring strict demand-side assurances for every transaction.
- First purchase of carbon removal via in-situ mineralization for the procurement collective
- Initial deployment of the technology within the Middle East region
- Targeted delivery timeline spanning 2028 through 2031 for permanent sequestration
By supporting ventures that utilize unconventional geological formations, the coalition aims to broaden the geographical availability of permanent storage options. Traditional storage methods often face regional constraints, but mineralization approaches offer the potential to unlock new territories where conventional storage remains economically unfeasible.
