Expedia Reports Travelers Use AI for Trip Planning But Book Direct
Expedia Group is experiencing a growing volume of high-intent consumer traffic originating from artificial intelligence discovery platforms, though actual reservations continue to flow directly through established brand channels. During the company third-quarter earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Ariane Gorin outlined how modern consumers increasingly leverage automated tools for early-stage trip research and itinerary creation.
The Role of Agentic Discovery in Travel
Gorin explained that agentic technology demonstrates exceptional capability in the exploratory phase of travel planning. Consumers utilize intelligent conversational assistants to compare destinations, weigh lodging options, and map out vacation ideas. However, when the time arrives to finalize a transaction, travelers consistently pivot back to trusted enterprise brands. Users prefer booking through platforms they recognize to ensure reliable customer support and recourse if unexpected disruptions occur during their trips.
Company executives noted that while referral traffic from automated assistants carries strong purchase intent, the overall volume remains modest. Management observed that this emerging traffic stream appears largely incremental or redirects from alternative paid acquisition channels rather than cannibalizing core direct website visits. Economic frameworks governing these third-party AI integrations remain under active evaluation as partnerships scale.
Expanding Ecosystem Collaborations
To capture discovery-phase consumers, Expedia has forged several strategic technology alliances across the digital landscape. The corporation integrated its inventory into Google AI Mode and announced an upcoming connection with Meta Muse. Through the Meta Muse integration, the conversational system accesses live pricing and inventory data, allowing it to finalize transactions or seamlessly transfer the user directly to Expedia.
In addition to search and social integrations, the firm is participating in early tests for OpenAI advertising solutions. On the enterprise side, Qantas became the initial launch partner for Expedia proprietary agentic template. This B2B solution combines underlying supply, servicing, and technical infrastructure with customizable interface layers, enabling external partners to construct tailored travel experiences.
Internal Automation and Product Velocity
Beyond external distribution, Expedia is deploying machine learning tools internally to streamline operations and enhance product development. Key operational milestones include:
- A voice-enabled assistant deployed on the Vrbo platform successfully resolved over fifteen percent of inbound customer service contacts within its first two months of operation.
- Internal product teams constructed an autonomous hotel onboarding agent in less than one quarter, a development cycle that previously required multiple quarters and larger engineering staffs.
- Conversational compare agents and property experts embedded directly into the booking flow help shoppers evaluate accommodations, increasing user engagement and driving larger basket sizes.
- Travelers who interacted with the platform activity recommendation agent demonstrated double the likelihood of booking an excursion within a seven-day window.
From a financial perspective, Expedia reported solid third-quarter performance alongside its technological rollouts. Gross bookings advanced eleven percent, overall revenue expanded twelve percent, and B2B bookings registered a nineteen percent increase. Advertising revenue growth moderated to seven percent as Chief Financial Officer Derek Andersen directed product updates toward enhanced campaign tools and foundational architecture for future AI-driven advertising capabilities.
