Gudea Secures $7M in Seed Funding to Predict Viral Online Narratives and Reputational Risks
Gudea has successfully raised $7 million in seed funding to support its technology that anticipates which online narratives will go viral and identifies the key actors driving them. The latest financing round was co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Collide Capital, elevating the Minneapolis-based startup total funding to approximately $15 million since its founding in 2023. According to co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Keith Presley, the company has experienced a 357% year-over-year revenue growth. While declining to name specific clients due to the sensitive nature of its work, Gudea reports that its customer base includes major artificial intelligence corporations as well as enterprises in telecommunications, retail, and entertainment.
Tracing Information Pathways Across Platforms
The core premise behind Gudea is that traditional social listening tools, which rely primarily on mentions and hashtags, provide an incomplete picture of digital communication. Instead of merely tracking keywords, the startup maps how information flows across individuals, distinct groups, and more than 600 social media platforms. Presley likens the technology to a meteorological tool, describing the company as a storm tracker for the internet that uses established behavior patterns to forecast how far a narrative will spread, when it will peak, and when it will dissipate.
The enterprise originated from the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit organization that adapted intelligence community techniques originally deployed to disrupt online Al Qaeda and ISIS networks. During this period, James Thomin, who now serves as Gudea chief technology officer and co-founder, began developing software capable of mapping information pathways. A critical turning point occurred when the team analyzed the backlash surrounding a marketing campaign featuring actor Dylan Mulvaney and brand Bud Light. Recognizing that critics were utilizing the exact same information pathways previously identified in COVID-19 disinformation campaigns, the founders realized the broader commercial applicability of their research and spun the technology out into a dedicated company.
Proactive Risk Management and Behavioral Analysis
Gudea initial commercial focus centers on reputational risk management, assisting large organizations in detecting consequential stories long before they gain mainstream traction. The platform operates without requiring users to input specific search queries beforehand. By examining behavioral fingerprints rather than static content, the software can uncover both adverse risks and positive trends. The technology utilizes deep learning techniques, including graph neural networks, to evaluate unusual user behavior and how narratives migrate from obscure online communities to mainstream platforms. Additionally, the system employs a large language model to synthesize its findings into digestible reports, platform alerts, and automated updates tailored for senior leadership teams.

- Total funding reaches approximately $15 million since 2023
- Covers more than 600 social media platforms
The company market positioning emphasizes predictive capabilities rather than purely reactive monitoring. Mudita Venture Partners investor Buddy Foster noted that because damage to corporate brands frequently originates in fringe online spaces, traditional surface-layer tools are often inadequate. By modeling how information propagates across diverse networks, Gudea aims to provide enterprises with actionable foresight regarding the timeline, audience impact, and eventual decline of viral digital narratives. With 39 customers and approximately 25 employees, the startup plans to allocate its newly acquired capital toward team expansion, platform feature development, and broadening its geographical and linguistic coverage.
