HKEX Introduces New Green Equity Designation to Boost Sustainable Finance Transparency
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited has officially launched a voluntary program aimed at helping market participants easily identify corporations deeply committed to sustainable business operations. The initiative, known as the HKEX Green Equity designation program, seeks to provide a transparent mechanism for firms to highlight their contributions to the evolving green economy while satisfying growing institutional demand for reliable investment options.
Rigorous Qualification Criteria
To secure the new designation, participating entities must undergo thorough evaluations conducted by independent reviewers. These assessments rely directly on the established HKEX Green Equity Framework, which incorporates relevant global taxonomies and the World Federation of Exchanges Green Equity Principles. The evaluation model ensures alignment with broader international sustainability priorities and regulatory expectations.
Qualifying for the designation requires companies to meet strict operational and financial thresholds across several key areas:
- At least 50 percent of annual revenues must stem directly from environmentally sustainable activities.
- A minimum of 50 percent of total yearly capital investments must be dedicated to green projects or assets.
- Fossil fuel activities must account for strictly less than 5 percent of both overall revenues and capital investments.
- Firms must maintain full compliance with all relevant environmental, social, labor, employment, and health and safety laws.
Governance and Oversight Requirements
Beyond meeting specific revenue and investment metrics, candidate corporations must demonstrate robust internal management structures. Organizations are expected to implement systematic procedures for evaluating the ongoing environmental sustainability of their day-to-day operations. Furthermore, the framework mandates active board-level oversight concerning the formulation and execution of corporate sustainability strategies.
Once a company satisfies all requirements, it receives the official designation and gains authorization to utilize the designation mark in corporate communications. However, this status is contingent upon continuous compliance and mandatory annual reassessments to maintain integrity across the marketplace.
Strengthening Regional Market Position
Exchange leadership emphasizes that the creation of this pathway addresses an urgent need for credible, clear methodologies that separate genuine environmental contributors from other market participants. By increasing the visibility of qualifying sustainable enterprises, the exchange hopes to facilitate better-informed capital allocation decisions.
Paul Chow, group general counsel and group chief sustainability officer at the exchange group, noted that the structured approach and independent evaluation process will enhance visibility for qualifying organizations. He added that the initiative reinforces the region’s standing as a prominent international hub for sustainable finance by offering greater clarity and accountability to institutional investors.
