Norges Bank Investment Management Makes Milestone Battery Storage Investment with Aypa Power Stake
Norges Bank Investment Management, the organization managing Norway’s massive $2 trillion oil fund, has officially executed its very first direct investment in utility-scale battery storage. The institution acquired a 10 percent equity stake in Aypa Power, committing $300 million to support the prominent energy storage developer. This strategic transaction highlights the rapidly evolving priorities of major sovereign wealth funds as they seek to navigate the global energy transition and address the shifting demands of modern power grids.
Expanding Portfolio Through Strategic Infrastructure
Founded in 2017, Aypa Power specializes in developing, owning, and operating utility-scale energy storage and hybrid renewable energy systems. The company currently stands as the largest standalone battery storage developer across North America. Its impressive footprint encompasses approximately 6.5 gigawatts of operating, under-construction, and contracted battery storage capacity spanning both the United States and Canada, alongside an expansive development pipeline exceeding 20 gigawatts.
Through this financial maneuver, Norges Bank Investment Management joins forces alongside Brookfield. Brookfield previously secured the acquisition of Aypa Power from Blackstone earlier in July 2026, executing the transaction through its flagship global energy transition strategy, the Brookfield Global Transition Fund.
Addressing Modern Grid Realities and Renewable Intermittency
The imperative for sophisticated energy storage infrastructure has accelerated dramatically in recent years. As the deployment of wind and solar power generation surges worldwide, grid operators continuously face the challenge of managing the inherent intermittency of renewable sources. Energy storage solutions provide a critical mechanism to capture surplus generation, prevent energy waste, and satisfy round-the-clock electricity requirements.
Furthermore, contemporary electrical grids face unprecedented demand spikes driven by intensive new workloads, including artificial intelligence computing facilities and widespread transport electrification. Harald von Heyden, Global Head of Energy and Infrastructure at Norges Bank Investment Management, emphasized that storage has matured into an indispensable component of the broader energy ecosystem. He noted that the acquisition serves as a natural complement to the fund’s existing wind and solar portfolio while deepening the institutional relationship with Brookfield.
