TotalEnergies and KKR Expand Renewables Partnership with $1.2 Billion Solar Portfolio Addition
French energy major TotalEnergies and global alternative investment firm KKR have announced a major expansion of their United States-focused renewable energy joint venture. The transaction increases their jointly held portfolio by fifty percent through the incorporation of seven hundred megawatts of utility-scale solar assets located across Texas and Ohio. This new agreement carries an enterprise valuation of $1.2 billion for the newly added portfolio.
Building on an Established Partnership
This latest transaction follows the initial launch of the joint venture last year. That foundational agreement was established when KKR acquired a fifty percent stake in a broader portfolio of solar energy assets from TotalEnergies. The original venture comprised six large-scale solar projects totaling 1.3 gigawatts alongside forty-one smaller distributed generation sites contributing an additional 140 megawatts, primarily centered within the United States market.
Asset Operations and Strategic Growth
The newly integrated portfolio includes three utility-scale solar projects that anticipate reaching their commercial operation dates by the first quarter of 2027. The electricity generated by these facilities is already contracted for sale to third parties or will be actively marketed by TotalEnergies. Following the completion of the transaction, TotalEnergies will maintain its role in operating the assets.
TotalEnergies focuses on constructing a balanced portfolio that merges renewable energy generation with flexible assets such as storage facilities and gas-fired plants to supply reliable low-carbon electricity. Under its strategic roadmap, the company frequently divests up to half of its renewable assets upon reaching commercial operation in order to unlock capital value while effectively managing operational risk. TotalEnergies currently maintains over thirty-seven gigawatts of gross renewable power generation capacity and targets achieving more than 100 terawatt-hours of net electricity production by the year 2030.
Wider Clean Energy Investments
For KKR, this transaction represents the continuation of an aggressive strategy in clean energy infrastructure investments. Notable recent activities by the private equity firm include the establishment of a $1.3 billion renewable energy platform in collaboration with South Korean industrial conglomerate SK Group, as well as the multi-billion dollar acquisition of EDF North America’s renewable energy business earlier in the year.
