Texas Man Linked to Scattered Spider Sentenced to Prison Following Cyberattacks
A federal court has handed down a 45-month prison sentence to a Texas man who admitted to participating in attacks orchestrated by the prominent cybercrime collective known as Scattered Spider. The sentencing marks a notable milestone in ongoing international law enforcement efforts to dismantle digital extortion rings that target major corporate networks and virtual currency holdings.
Ahmed Hossam Eldin Elbadawy, a resident of College Station, Texas, pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. The prosecution stemmed from a superseding indictment filed in federal court. Originally facing potential maximum sentences of twenty years behind bars, Elbadawy received a composite prison term from U.S. District Judge John W. Holcomb in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
According to court documents and statements from the U.S. Department of Justice, the sentencing structure includes 21 months for the wire fraud conspiracy charge, followed by a mandatory minimum consecutive sentence of 24 months for aggravated identity theft. Upon completing his prison term, Elbadawy will face a three-year period of supervised release. During this probationary timeframe, he must surrender all digital devices, usernames, and passwords to his probation officer for continuous monitoring. Furthermore, he is legally mandated to report all virtual currency activity and faces a strict prohibition against utilizing privacy-focused blockchain currencies without explicit prior authorization.
Federal prosecutors detailed that Elbadawy was part of a broader criminal enterprise that relied heavily on sophisticated social engineering tactics. Members utilized deceptive text message phishing campaigns to target corporate employees nationwide. By harvesting valid enterprise credentials, the actors breached internal networks to extract confidential company data and compromise virtual currency accounts, ultimately stealing millions of dollars in digital assets.
As part of the judgment, Judge Holcomb ordered the complete forfeiture of Elbadawy’s ill-gotten gains. The asset seizure encompasses substantial cryptocurrency holdings, including 175 bitcoin and 1,306 ethereum tokens. Based on market valuations at the time of the proceedings, the combined digital currency totals millions of dollars. In addition to cryptocurrency assets, federal authorities will confiscate physical luxuries, including numerous pairs of designer shoes, artwork, a cash reserve, high-end motor vehicles, an all-terrain vehicle, gold jewelry, and luxury watches and handbags from designer brands.
Security researchers and law enforcement agencies have previously connected the wider network of Scattered Spider operatives to high-profile network intrusions affecting diverse industry sectors, ranging from retail and hospitality to insurance, aviation, technology, and critical urban infrastructure. While individual participants have faced prosecution, international bodies such as Britain’s National Crime Agency have reported that coordinated multi-jurisdictional law enforcement actions have significantly disrupted the collective’s operational capacity.
Elbadawy has been ordered to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons to commence his sentence, alongside fulfilling an unspecified financial restitution requirement.
