Block Enters x402 Foundation to Advance Open Standards for Agentic Commerce
Financial technology company Block has officially joined the x402 Foundation, aiming to contribute to the development of open and community-governed standards for agentic commerce. The move was detailed in a corporate blog post published by Steve Reis, head of product for the Block Financial Platform.
According to the announcement, Block intends to leverage its extensive industry background across both traditional financial payments and consumer-facing products to actively support the foundation’s working groups. As part of this initiative, the company will continue its ongoing contributions toward integrating Bitcoin Lightning support into the x402 protocol, alongside designing and building open tools tailored for autonomous agent transactions.
Reis noted that aligning with the foundation represents a logical extension of Block’s broader ecosystem efforts in the artificial intelligence and digital commerce space. Previously, the company contributed its open-source AI agent, named goose, participated in the launch of the Agentic AI Foundation, and joined the Universal Commerce Protocol.
Establishing Neutral Rails for Autonomous Transactions
By joining forces with the x402 Foundation, Block hopes to establish a collaborative foundation for developers and merchants alike. Reis emphasized that the emerging agentic economy should be constructed upon open financial rails, ensuring that no single corporate entity maintains sole control over the underlying infrastructure.
- Developers can freely implement open standards to create innovative use cases.
- Sellers gain expanded access to new consumer demographics and their automated purchasing agents.
- Autonomous software agents can execute payments smoothly on behalf of human users while compensating other digital services.
Furthermore, Block anticipates that these open mechanisms will help position bitcoin as a practical option for everyday transactions. By facilitating high-volume, low-value micro-payments, the agentic economy could unlock fresh utility for cryptocurrency assets.
The Evolution of the x402 Protocol
The x402 protocol was originally developed by Coinbase and unveiled in May 2025. Built around the classic HTTP “402 Payment Required” status code, the open standard was engineered to integrate stablecoin transactions directly into standard web interactions.
The governance framework of the technology shifted in April, when Coinbase and the Linux Foundation announced that the protocol would transition to the Linux Foundation. This transition culminated in the formal establishment of the x402 Foundation in July as an open-governance organization supported by roughly 40 member entities.
Erik Reppel, creator of x402 and a member of the Technical Steering Committee for the x402 Foundation, welcomed Block’s participation. Reppel stated that introducing Bitcoin Lightning compatibility to the protocol strengthens the open standard and broadens the operational capabilities available to all developers building systems for agentic commerce.
