SAP Expands Joule Assistants and Agents to Advance Autonomous Supply Chain Management
Enterprise software leader SAP has announced major expansions to its Joule assistants and the introduction of specialized Joule agents designed to drive autonomous supply chain management. Unveiled at the SAP Connect event, the updates aim to address the critical challenge of decision velocity, helping organizations move beyond mere analysis to automated, coordinated action across integrated business applications.
Accelerating Decision Velocity in Complex Networks
According to Devesh Mishra, general manager and chief product officer for SAP Supply Chain Management, modern supply chain teams face a constant influx of decisions but lack the time required for manual resolution. Because supply chain domains are deeply interconnected, a change in manufacturing directly impacts planning, logistics, assets, and external suppliers. Traditional artificial intelligence applications often automate isolated tasks, creating fragmented value. The newly introduced Joule capabilities operate within the broader business context governing the entire supply chain, allowing insights in one domain to trigger authorized, coordinated actions elsewhere.
New Capabilities Across Specialized Domains
The latest expansion builds upon six Joule assistants previously introduced at SAP Sapphire by adding specialized agents tailored for distinct operational areas. General availability for these advanced capabilities is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. Key functional areas include:
- The Product Design Assistant, which interprets specifications and orchestrates compliant design changes to accelerate time to market.
- The Supply Chain Planning Assistant, enabling teams to simulate and resolve planning exceptions within a single workspace to prevent disruptions.
- The Manufacturing Assistant, built to help personnel respond to plant-floor disruptions in real time.
- The Logistics Assistant, extending across warehousing, fulfillment, and transportation dispatching to execute logistics strategies.
- The Asset Operations Assistant, which translates equipment maintenance signals into actionable requests and simulations.
- The Business Network Assistant, designed to improve collaboration with external suppliers and logistics partners during sourcing and exception handling.
Early Enterprise Adopters Report Efficiency Gains
Global corporations are already testing these autonomous features to streamline operations. Takeda Pharmaceuticals is implementing the Supply Chain Planning Assistant to identify root causes behind planning challenges and propose corrective measures. Rebecca Kaufmann, senior vice president and head of Enterprise Platforms at Takeda, noted that the system combines SAP technology expertise with internal experience to achieve adaptive, self-healing planning processes. Similarly, Doehler is utilizing the logistics issue resolution agent to handle complex transportation challenges. Stephan Schissler, CIO at Doehler GmbH, reported that the tool has enabled the logistics team to recover roughly a third of the time previously spent on troubleshooting by turning multi-hour investigations into streamlined decisions.
Maintaining Trust and Human Oversight
As artificial intelligence takes on a larger role in daily operations, enterprise leaders must retain clear visibility into automated actions. SAP has grounded its new Joule agents in the underlying data and governance models of its software portfolio, ensuring that organizations can define authorization boundaries, audit decisions, and maintain human oversight where necessary. By combining automated execution with trusted governance, the platform aims to reduce routine administrative work and allow professionals to focus on strategic resilience and customer value.
